There are mysterious Muslims on our island.
I live on a tiny island in the Caribbean Sea called Trinidad and Tobago. I live on the island of Trinidad. Muslims make up approximately 20% of a population of 1.5 million people. To many on our island, the Muslim population is mysterious and we are not well understood.
It is generally thought that we have two groups of Muslims here; the gangsters who are predominantly of African descent who usually have weapons and are considered criminals, the docile bunch who look and behave like everyone else and wear hijabs when going to the masjid.
People are slowly beginning to realize that there is a third group of Muslims who wear hijabs and jubbas; work, study, prayer and invite persons to Islam.
I belong to this last group. It is my view that the best dawaah is the one where persons learn Islam by looking at us and dealing with us. So I strive to be a living embodiment of Islam in my little school….. It is easy to say but it is hard to do because there are always challenges……….
I work in a school teaching health and safety to adults where there are three other Muslims on staff. I’m the only one who wears a hijab though and on few occasions we have Muslim students. However, this year 2016, the boss wanted to have a Sports Day. We organised and had a Sports Day and Curry Duck Competition on 26th November 2016.
It was amazing… We were expecting about 300 persons and around 100 attended the event………..
We actually were able to get adult non-Muslims to agree to no alcohol on the day and all the food brought in and prepared was halaal.
My class knows I don’t eat and actually went out of their way to make sure that the duck was halaal. There are two young Muslim men in my class. One brought paratha roti and the other cooked the curry duck and made basmati rice…………….
I was impressed and so pleased with them……………..
Years ago………in our country, an event like that with 99% non-Muslims could never have taken place………
Now my boss is saying that he wants to make this an annual event……..
Especially where the students have discovered that they could have fun without alcohol
